Spring has sprung – it’s time for day trips!

I’m writing this at my new desk position: in front of a huge window with clear blue sky, the sun streaming in and the daffodils swaying. It’s amazing how something as simple as lovely sunshine can brighten the mood and get you planning some great day trips for family members, especially mum and dad. Spring’s the ideal time for our parents to get out of the house at last, shed those woollies and stretch those legs while the weather’s good.

We love using the National Trust website and their 25% senior membership discount; an added incentive to get out there to make the most of our beautiful historical sites here in the UK.

Ideas for Spring day trips

The National Trust provides an amazing choice for days out, from the 300 historic buildings in their care to the 200 beautiful gardens and parks to explore and enjoy. Depending on what part of the country your older loved ones live, you can search their website by ‘days out’ and location and all the local houses and gardens pop up for you to choose from. We’re looking into their gardens in particular and they’re really showcasing the beauty of the UK’s flower and fauna this spring. For example Cliveden’s glorious gardens overlooking the Thames, where you can see frogspawn, lovely polyanthus gardens and even help to plant next year’s snowdrops. You can have a go at birdwatching in the grounds of Croome in Worcestershire, or see the snowdrops, ornamental gardens and views of Cardigan Bay at Plas yn Rhiw in Wales. The Lake District is a favourite and seeing the Japanese quince, wild primroses, lungwort and forsythias at Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s old house is a real Spring treat.

Stay in touch and stay safe

Our parents still drive to various locations on day trips, but now also take advantage of the numerous day trip companies that provide all-in coach travel and the chance to socialise with like-minded people. It gives us peace of mind too, knowing that they can relax and be looked after door to door on their day out. We also ensure that they each have a decent, charged mobile phone with them for that added safety and peace of mind for everyone. We love the latest Denver GSP-131 senior mobile flip phone that’s just arrived in stock, at only £25.99 +P&P. It’s got all the usual features you’ll want; SMS texting, phone book, speed dial, silent mode, FM radio, bluetooth, alarm clock, calendar. With handy features for our senior loved ones; an SOS button for emergencies, large buttons, a clear 2” colour TFT display, talking number dial, it’s SIM free unlocked ready for any network, except Three. Here’s to happy, relaxing day-trips all round!
